These villager's from my familes Muu Baan at Si Muang Mai our doing what all Thais think of first everyday! These rural Thais share food, talk and settle the many little issues that occur on a daily basis in their home village. This dinner was for the friends and family of Father Boon. One would think that "Death" would put a blanket on such a function as this.In Thailand, food and talk our second nature, death, birth or a comet heading towards Earth would in no way interfere with a chance to sit and eat and talk.It is normal in rural Thailand to have a eating session that pretty much last all day and well into the late evening hours.Once a meal is finished and the dishes our cleaned, another meal is already being prepared. If a friend stops by to talk, then food will appear like magic,as well as the local brand of cheap rice whiskey and beer. You will rarely see Thai females sit and drink or eat with the males of the village.Check out the picture and count the males in it!Women do the cooking, cleaning, dishes, shopping and that folks is the way it is.Males eat, drink, make jokes and argue politics. The women feed the monks and children and do the other family chores.Men our Farmers,Fishermen, business men!It may surprise western women to a large degree that Thai women don't rail against this format in a Thai marriage, but Thai women for the most part our OK with the way things have been for hundreds of years in Thailand.I can tell you with a 100% degree of accuracy, you will never see a Thai male doing dishes, laundry, cooking(that is a little different on certain occasion's)but they sure in hell will be eating almost 24/7,and everybody else in "LOS" will be doing the same thing.Food and eating our second to "Buddha" only! The dogs will also be fed the very same things you see these villagers eating....no such thing as Purina dog chow in rural Thailand. Also, most western people would not like the dipping of food into hot sauce, after that food had been in another persons mouth, the leaving of food out on a table with a vast army of flies attacking everything they can find and many other things we as western people find a little disgusting. It is also worth noting, that you will not have a clue what you our eating(don't ask),just enjoy and keep smiling, because you will be asked five minutes after you have eaten,"Our you hungry?)luckkyybuddha999...just want to pass on this great blog site on rural life in Thailand(http://www.memock.wordpress.com/....memock lives in "Isaan Country"and owns a business in Ubon.Lots of good information on that well written blog
