Facebook Employee Proposes to Google Girlfriend

Posted: 08 Feb 2010 06:37 AM PST

How does the Senior Platform Manager at Facebook Dave Morin propose to his Google girlfriend Brittany Bohnet? Simple, by spelling out "B. Will you marry me?" in coconuts on a a sandy beach in the Maldives and flying over it in a private charter plane while she gets to pilot it.

She obviously said yes, what girl in their right mind wouldn't and the whole thing was later posted on a Flickr gallery with a bunch of photos.

13-Year-Old With Lipodystrophy Looks Middle-Aged

Posted: 05 Feb 2010 06:16 AM PST

At the age of 13, Zara Hartshorn already looks 50. Hartshorn, who is from Rotherham, England, suffers from a rare genetic disease known as lipodystrophy. The disease causes the supporting fatty tissue under the skin to crumble even while the skin continues to grow, often at an alarming rate.

Only around 2,000 people in the world are said to have the condition, and there is currently no known cure. The effects of the disease have caused Hartshorn a great deal of hardship and discomfort.

Sadly, lipodystrophy is a family affair for the Hartshorns: Zara's mother, Tracey, suffers from the same genetic disorder, as do two of Zara's siblings. But the affects of lipodystrophy are especially pronounced in Zara; at 13, she looks older than her 21-year-old sister Jolene and 16-year-old brother Tommy, though both also have the disease. PainStation

PainStation was created by two German designers. It's almost a normal Pong game. But when you lose you don't just feel the dissapointment, you also feel pain. Your left hand is positioned on the Pain Execution Unit and missing the ball results in different types of pain. You may feel heat, punches or electroshocks of varying duration depending where the ball hits. The game ends when one of the players decides that he had enough pain.

I've been looking for something like this to give to my relatives and friends so they can maintain their own PCs without calling me!"

Free Pursuits - Your Chance to Write a Guest Post (El Niño Edition)

Feb 04, 2010 03:30 am | Corbett Barr

Happy Thursday everyone. It is Thursday, right? The days tend to run together when you’re living in a small foreign town.

On a quick living-in-Mexico update, I have two Spanish words to tell you about: El Niño. If you haven’t heard of El Niño before, it’s not just a Mexican thing or the Spanish phrase for “the boy”. I’m referring to the weather pattern that is caused by periodic warming of surface waters in the Pacific ocean.

I’ve experienced El Niño before, living on the West Coast. It usually results in above average temperatures and above average rainfall. At least that’s what it was like in Seattle and Portland before.

In Mexico this year, at least on the Pacific Coast around 19 degrees North latititude, it has caused two big changes. First, the surf has been much better than normal near the town we’re in, which is awesome. Second, it’s been raining (with lightning) for the past couple of days like cats and dogs, which is not so awesome.

It rained so much yesterday that I started building an ark. Seriously, it was blowing sideways at what sounded like 100 km/h. We’re talking tropical storm type rain here, and it left about 3-4 inches of standing water in much of our beachfront condo.

Anyways, I’ll gladly take a little rain while living in paradise. It’s just a little shocking considering we didn’t see rain down here last winter for 4 months straight. Hopefully it will clear up in the next day or two, but in the mean time I’m getting quite a bit of work done.

Guest Post Contest

Speaking of getting work done, I have so much lined up (like the new projects I mentioned recently) that I’d like to run a few guest posts here while I’m busy.

Some of my favorite posts on this blog have been written by guest authors. Some of your favorites (or most popular, at least) were also guest posts, like Are You Putting Off Life Until Later? by Chris Garrett, 5 Lessons from a 2-Month Remote Work Experiment by Tim Leffel and The Smart Ass Guide to Dealing with Dream Zappers by Ashley Ambirge.

Writing a guest post at Free Pursuits can help you increase readership and subscribers to your own blog. A great post can be read by thousands or tens-of-thousands of readers. Just ask Ashley Ambirge. I recall she was very happy with what her guest post here did for her readership at The Middle Finger Project.

I haven’t asked for new guest posts in a while, so I’m going to run a little contest this time. If you’d like to write a guest post, you have until next Friday, the 12th of February to submit your complete article for this round. Feel free to send me an email with a proposal if you’d like to run an idea by me before you write it. Take a look at the popular articles in the sidebar if you’re curious about what types of posts do well here.

For topic inspiration, how about continuing the conversation we started last week about what lifestyle design means now, and how it’s changing? Maybe you could share a real-life story about progress you’ve made towards your own ideal lifestyle?

I’ll take the top 2-4 guest posts I receive by next Friday and will run them over the following few weeks. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments or shoot me an email. Good luck!

Love Valley

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 02:20 PM PST

Love Valley in Cappadocia, Turkey is unusual, to say the least - it is not something that you see during the thirty seconds of those dizzyingly gorgeous TV adverts enticing you to visit the country - for some strange reason. Apparently, people take one look at this strange geology and think of something else entirely. This modestly named place seems to be made for those with a dirty mind.

Realistic Oil Paintings by Alyssa Monks

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 01:08 PM PST

Look at these extraordinarily expressive oil paintings. Sometimes it's very difficult to distinguish them from photos.

Alyssa Monks paints these images, paying meticulous attention to detail. The 31-year-old said,

"I have always wanted to paint for as long as I can remember. I took classes at school and then went to college and University before ending up at the New York Academy of Art".

The New York artist is in demand, currently showing at a prestigious exhibition at the National Academy Museum. Plans are also in the works for an exhibition at the Kunst Museum Ahlen in Germany and a museum show at the Noyes Museum in New Jersey for next summer. I certainly hope that she will expand her exhibition so that I can view more of her work in person.

Big Sandy Shoot

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 11:50 AM PST

Every year, the Big Sandy Shoot draws in hundreds of shooter from all over the world, for what is known as the "largest shoot".

The Big Sandy Shoot is a bi-annual event, held in the western desert of Arizona, where you can shoot your heart out for three straight days. Featuring a 1500 foot firing line, 1200 yard maximum range, over 1000 reactive targets and aerial targets, this is one shooting exhibition you don't want to miss, if you're into this stuff.

Machine-guns, gatling guns, bazookas, and pretty much every other type of weapon ever invented can be found at the Big Sandy Shoot. Shooters have to fork out $230 ($200 if reserved in advance) to participate and spectators just $25. Both have to sign a release waiver stating they enter the shooting range at their own risk.

The average 3.5 million rounds fired at the Big Sandy Shoot certify it as the world's biggest shooting event. I can't say that impresses me much and regarding the safety, seeing women and kids handling deadly equipment isn't very reassuring.
